PLASTIC IMPREGNATED WIRE ROPE (PIR)

PLASTIC IMPREGNATED ROPE (PIR)

Plastic impregnated ropes are used for severe applications where the rope is exposed to high levels of abrasive dust, dirt and other corrosives which may penetrate the rope under normal operation. They are also useful where high wear and fatigue levels are normal. They are often used on coal and ore un-loaders and some piling applications.

Plastic impregnated rope can be completely covered in plastic, both inside and out, or just the core strands are done, both offer similar abilities but the completely covered version makes inspection almost impossible, making it unsuitable for some applications.

PIR is made during a process in which steel wire rope in impregnated with a thermoplastic, which fills and seals all voids between the rope strands, providing a barrier against harmful ingress, and acting as a cushion to prevent internal wear as the strands will no longer rub against each other. This process also prolongs the life of the rope considerably, though can cost a little more initially.

The plastic filling acts as a cushion and reduces wire contact bending stresses and so improving load transfer and sharing between wires and strands. This results in continued flexibility, much more resistant to shock loading and a great increase in the working life of the rope. However it is not quite as flexible as standard wire rope.

The plastic filling also sticks together the internal strands preventing them from rubbing and therefore wearing, this is also beneficial to rotating rope as this often un-twists, but the plastic filling prevents this from happening.

If a completely plastic covered rope is used then the contact wear is minimised as the full cross section makes contact with drums / sheaves, where as with a normal wire rope only certain points around the perimeter make contact, causing high pressure contact points, and so wear.
