CHAIN BLOCK / MANUAL CHAIN HOIST
During this news page we will examine some basic facts about manual chain hoists, and how they work. They are often called chain blocks, block and tackle, hand chain hoist or manual hoists. For the purpose of this article we will refer to them as chain blocks.
A chain block is a lifting device which is manually operated, not power assisted. They work by the means of the chain being pulled over the two different sized gears/pulleys which multiply the force, inside the housing. The chain block is hooked on to a crane, gantry or beam or other suitable anchor points, the load is then suspended from the lower hook, and raised by pulling down on the chain, which then turns the gears inside, then there is a braking system to hold the load at the required height. Most chain blocks come with overload prevention devices for additional safety, they can also be supplied with chain buckets to store the excess chain in, keeping it out of the way, and prevent damage to the chain.
Chain blocks offer an economical and versatile way of lifting heavy loads, they are particularly useful for fine accurate movements, and are often used in workshops and factories, and other places where the electric supply is not available. They are also portable, making them versatile.
There are now new models on the market offering 360 degree rotation of the load allowing the operator to work in most positions, even above the load.
There are many safety aspects to consider when using chain blocks, and manufacturers instructions should always be closely followed. We will post some safety information next week.
