HOW TO HANDLE WIRE ROPES, SAFELY.
When using and handling wire ropes there are many safety aspects to consider, to prevent injury to the persons handling the rope and to prevent damage to the wire rope itself, here we provide some of the basic information.
One of the most common ways of damaging wire ropes is incorrect off loading from a lorry, the safest way is to use a soft sling passed through the centre of the wire rope reel and lowered using an electric hoist. Forklifts can be used but must be done carefully, the best way is to insert a pole through the reel and rest this pole onto the forks so that the reel sits between the forks, the reel and wire should never rest on the forks as this can crush, bend or split it, and therefore damage the wire rope. Wire ropes can also be easily damaged if they are unwound from the reel incorrectly, which often results in kinks and bends, rendering the rope useless. The rope should never be thrown off the reel in turns, it is often best to suspend the reel on jacks (with the pole through the centre) or a turntable, or some way in which the reel can rotate freely, the wire rope can then be pulled from the reel without the risk of damage. If the wire is coiled (not on a reel) then the best way to unroll it is in the fashion of pushing a childs hoop, making sure the ground is clean and clear. When re-winding wire rope back onto the reel, great care must be taken to keep the tension and should be layered neatly.
Wire ropes should also be stored carefully, never left lying on the floor, wire ropes should be stored in a clean and more importantly dry area, as water and condensation ingress can lead to corrosion problems.
When handling wire ropes suitable safety gloves should always be worn to prevent splinters and burns etc. Eye protection should always be worn when cutting ropes as sharp fibres can fly off and if using mechanical cutters, sparks are commonplace. A good apron, (leather) is very usefull when handling and splicing the wire ropes, again to prevent nasty wire splinters.
Always follow any manufacturers instructions, and have your wire ropes inspected and tested regularly.
