WIRE ROPES, some basic information

WIRE ROPES

Here at lifting equipment limited we are able to supply you with a wide and varied range of wire ropes from crane ropes to wire rope slings, along with their numerous fittings, made up here on site.

 Here is a little basic information on wire ropes.

Wire rope is a strong, weather resistant cable made from many small metal strands wrapped and braided together.

 The strength of a wire rope comes from the separate wires equalizing pressure throughout the rope.

Often a wire rope has steel strands wrapped around a central core, which can be of steel or fibres, this allows the rope to hold a lot of weight yet still stay supple.

 The individual filaments are wrapped into a bunch called a strand, then several strands are arranged into a larger bunch called a wire, surrounding a central core, called the sheath.

Wire rope can come with a vinyl or nylon coating to increase weather resistance and durability, however it can lead to weak joints if the coating is not removed correctly underneath joints and connections.

Wire rope can often be maintained by cleaning and lubricating.

The most important aspect to consider when choosing a wire rope is it's breaking strength, it is wise never to load the wire rope to its breaking strength limit for safety purposes,

 so therefore it is best to choose a wire rope with a higher breaking strength if it will be regularly used to lift loads close to its limit.

Some general properties of wire ropes to consider before purchasing are:

• Diameter
• Breaking strength
• Corrosion resistance
• Difficulty of flattening/crushing
• Flexibility (vital when used in machinery such as cranes/ elevators and cable cars etc.)
• Lifespan
• Stretch
• Lay, (right/left hand lay, equal lay, langs lay etc.)
• Type of terminations / fittings required.
