We make chain slings and chain blocks to your own individual specification, you choose the number of legs whether that be single leg chain slings, 2 leg chain slings, 3 leg or 4 leg at any length to suit your application.

We can give your choices of end fittings including many types of lifting hooks and we can also fit shortening devices for an even greater range and flexibility of slinging.

Our slings start at 7mm diameter giving your 1.5 tonne on a straight lift right up to 32mm diameter and a working load limit of 31.5 tonnes.

Grade 80 Chain Slings : Tips

Here are some basic safety tips and usage guidelines

Balanding the load

Load Stability

It is imperative to always make sure the load is well balanced prior to lifting, and that no tilting occurs. The sling should be fixed about the centre of gravity, then raised just clear of the ground, if any tilting occurs the sling must be adjusted so that the lifting point is vertically central to the line of gravity

When a long load is to be lifted, particularly in confined spaces, it is common safety practice to attach a tag line to either one or both ends of the load; This is to allow the slinger total control in the movement and rotation of the load.

Landing a load safely

Safe Landing of a Load

Always prepare the landing site for the load this is commonly done by clearing the space and appropriately placing some timber batons for the load to be placed on, and so allowing the chain to be easily slid out from under the load. Never land a load directly onto the chain.

Storing chain slings

It is essential to store chain slings on a purposely made hanging rack when not in use, to prevent damage to the chain. They should not be left hung from a crane, and should never be left on the floor

Safe Temperature Limits When Using Chain Slings

Acidic Conditions
Grade 80 chain slings should not be in or near acidic or caustic solutions due to the risk of hydrogen embrittlement

What to look for when inspecting chain slings

Always examine before each use, if any doubt them remove from service until it has been properly inspected and tested by a qualified person.

Chain sling inspection list

Look out for: -

  1. Masterlink Distortion, wear or cracks
  2. Illegible safety markings
  3. Ensure shorteners have no cracks or distortions
  4. Ensure load + retaining pins are secure and no missing.
  5. Links must be checked for dents, cracks or twists and corrosion
  6. Coupling components should have no cracked or distorted parts.
  7. Safety catches should be present and working correctly
  8. Check hooks for distortion

Inspecting Chain Slings
As chain slings are classed as lifting equipment acessories they need to be inspected by an appropriate person at less than 6 monthly periods. A valid certificate of inspection or declaration of conformity should always be available. Always check chain slings prior to each use for signs of damaged links etc. If any doubts arise then do not use until it has been thoroughly inspected and tested by a competent person

Instructions For The Safe Use If Chain Slings

The following safety procedures should always be strictly followed to prevent injury
You must always:
  • Stay well clear of a moving load
  • Inspect your chain sling and accessories prior to each use and before storing
  • Carry out a test lift to make sure the load is secure and well balanced
  • Ensure any unused chain legs are securely hooked back out of the way.
  • Adopt safe slinging procedures, know the load weight and sling capacity, test, check then lift
  • Carefully position the sling with outward facing hooks, pack any sharp corners.
  • Check the chain sling is within its inspection period
  • Use shortening device when needed to ensure a correctly balanced and secure
  • Position sling so the lifting point is directly in line with the centre of gravity
You must never:
  • Use a sling which is worn or damaged in any way
  • Shorten a sling leg in any other way than an integral shortening device fir for the purpose
  • Lift a load balanced on the hooks tip, it must always sit securely in the bowl
  • Use in extreme temperatures; above 200 or below minus 40 degrees centigrade, without speaking with the manufacturer
  • Let persons ride on the chain sling
  • Know twist or tie a chain
  • Overload, pay attention to the SWL
  • Land a load onto the chain directly, use batterns
  • Try to free a trapped chain from under a load
  • use in conditions using chemical compounds or acids without speaking to supplier.
